The Sugar Question: Does Removing Glucose Hurt Absorption?
This is the most important difference between these two products, and almost nobody writing about Liquid IV vs DripDrop addresses it properly.
ORS science is built on a specific mechanism: the SGLT1 sodium-glucose cotransporter in your small intestine. When glucose and sodium arrive together at the intestinal wall, SGLT1 transports both into your cells, and water follows passively.[3] This is why the WHO has recommended glucose in ORS formulas since the 1970s. The optimal glucose-to-sodium ratio for absorption is roughly 2:1.[5]
DripDrop keeps glucose in its formula specifically for this reason. Its 7g sugar provides the fuel SGLT1 needs to function.
Liquid IV Sugar-Free replaces glucose with allulose. Allulose tastes like sugar and doesn't raise blood glucose, but it does not activate SGLT1 the same way glucose does. A 2023 study in Frontiers in Sports and Active Living found that glucose-based ORS maintained better fluid balance post-exercise than sugar-free alternatives.[6]

DripDrop was born from a medical crisis. Dr. Eduardo Dolhun, a family physician trained at Mayo Medical School, created it after witnessing cholera victims who couldn't tolerate existing ORS solutions. He spent years developing a formula that met WHO standards for ORS while tasting good enough for patients to actually drink. The product launched in 2010 and has since been adopted by military medics and hospital systems. DripDrop remains an independent company.
Liquid IV was founded in 2012 by Brandin Cohen in El Segundo, California, with a consumer wellness focus from the start. The brand uses the term "Cellular Transport Technology" (CTT) to describe its formula. CTT is essentially sodium-glucose cotransport with a marketing name. Unilever acquired Liquid IV in October 2020, giving it massive retail distribution. The brand has quadrupled in size since the acquisition.
One study worth noting: researchers at WSU Vancouver found no significant difference between Liquid IV and water alone for mildly dehydrated participants. That doesn't mean electrolyte supplements are useless, but it does suggest that for mild dehydration, the advantage over plain water may be smaller than marketing implies.
